You will need to make it through that decision point in order to go further. In many cases the job description will give you clues as to the relevant keywords. Take a few minutes to customize the resume to fit the job, it could mean the difference between getting picked and being trashed.
Stay abreast of current trends in your line of work: Even if you are out of the workforce make it a point to stay informed. Online resources are aplenty, do your research so that you can converse intelligently when asked about the happening trends in your industry.
Network: Word of mouth is still the most powerful endorser you can get, so get out there and advertise your skills. There are professional networking sites like LinkedIn that can be an effective tool. If you are a Facebook kind of person, use that to grow your network and connect with a wider circle.
