A week of work experience can set a career in motion

Don’t write off schemes such as Backing Young Britain, they can younger
workers break into the jobs market, says James Caan.

The recession has seen the Government introduce a range of initiatives to
stimulate employment. Whether it’s providing support to banks that have been
on the brink of collapse, or introducing schemes aimed at younger workers,
it has been instrumental in helping the UK’s work force to pick themselves
up and “get back on the horse”.

It is in response to the Job Centre Plus cross-government scheme “Backing
Young Britain” that I have had a number of readers contact me asking my
thoughts on the benefits of such an initiative.

Take this letter for instance… “I am a retail manager who is now in
the position to start taking on additional staff. After getting in contact
with the job centre to place my recruitment vacancies, they suggested using
a service that will allow me to trial a prospective young worker …
