The new minimum wage for apprentices under age 19 risks undermining Government efforts to entice employers to hire more young people, a business group has warned.

Apprentices will be entitled to a national minimum wage for the first time ever of £2.50 per hour from October 1, the Government announced today. The new rate will come into effect alongside other increases to the national minimum wage for all workers.

But Adam Marshall, director of policy and external affairs at the British Chambers of Commerce, warned the new apprentice minimum wage could put companies off hiring staff…
