The UK’s first-class reputation in aerospace makes it a dynamic sector to work in. But, asks Thea Jourdan, with a skills shortage on the horizon, what is being done to fill the gap?

When it comes to aerospace, the UK is undeniably a world leader. As international delegates and buyers flood in for the biannual Farnborough International Airshow next week, UK companies proudly boast 17 per cent of the global market share, second only to the US. The reason is simple — this country has a mature sector which has rock-solid history, but it is also highly flexible, adaptable and innovative.

“The UK has been very proactive in maintaining its standing in the aerospace industry,” says Simon Wright, UK head of engineering at BAE Systems. “Companies like ours have continued to invest in research, education and product development.”
