Bags of opportunities in the retail sector

Despite the recession there are still at least 50,000 jobs at any one time in the frenetic world of retail.

While some high street shops have undoubtedly suffered in recent months, the retail industry is still the largest private sector employer in the UK with 291,000 businesses, three million employees and an annual turnover of £265billion.

And with an average staff turnover rate of 40%, around 1.2 million people across the UK swap, leave or change jobs every year – leaving lots of room for newcomers.

“There have been some high-profile retail closures, but it’s not all doom and gloom,” says Anne Seaman, of Skillsmart Retail (www.skillsmartretail.com).

“Retail firms still employ one in 10 people in the UK.”
