Being a librarian in the 21st century

Gone is the stereotypical librarian with reading glasses perched on
her nose and a tight bun twisted atop her head as she whispered
“Shush!”. The modern librarian is a computer expert who is likely to be
recommending a graphic novel or helping a patron to find a magazine
online.
One of the changes that has been made in most libraries is to have an automated catalog.
No longer does a student flip through cards trying to find the
location of a book. Now everything is online. Many libraries print due
date slips online as well as barcodes, late notices, call numbers,
everything is tied to a highly technological program. Newer libraries
even have self-checkout systems.
While it makes many aspects of the job easier. There really is just
more time at the computer and we are more dependent on computers for
nearly aspect of the library.
Interlibrary loan is just a click away. In seconds the user can be
logged into the state library network and can checkout a book from
across the state…
