Building, manufacturing and the entertainment industries are the worst three private sector areas for jobs, official statistics have shown.

Vacancies in the construction industry have plummeted by 15pc year-on-year, to 10,000 jobs available in the three months to June, down from 12,000 over the same period last year. Compared to pre-recession levels, in the three months to June 2008, construction vacancies are running at nearly a third the amount – down from 27,000 vacancies.

The arts, entertainment and recreation sector is the next worst hit, the ONS figures showed, registering a 0.9pc decline in vacancies year-on-year, to reach 11,000…
