A dental assistant curriculum is designed to enable students to earn the designation as a registered dental assistant or a Certified Dental Assistant. Once you complete the courses and a student passes the National Board dental examination, a dental assistant can work in private practice, in hospital or clinic settings or in a dental school. The two years of study should be taken from a college or university program online, or technical school accredited by the American Dental Association (ADA).
Anatomy
Students will learn the numbers of all the teeth, jaw anatomy and bone structure, the muscle and nerves and arteries in the head and neck.
Intra-oral functions
Dental Assistants must learn to provide services such as intra-oral placement of sealants and molds of the patients mouth, teeth grinding and removal of temporary bridges.
Chair-side techniques
Students learn to work with the hands of the four methods of dentistry, which involves working alongside a dentist, and assisting in all procedures.
Radiograph
A dental assistant curriculum teaches students how to prepare patients for X-rays shoot and develop film.
Patient interaction
Students learn to interact with patients and were presented with various scenarios they may encounter, such as how to calm nervous patients. The curriculum teaches students how to prepare patients for dental work properly seat cover with a bib and providing tools for the dentist.
Internship
A dental assistant curriculum requires an internship or job, as part of the requirement for graduation and certification. Internships range for 8 weeks to 6 months. Interns can be paid at work.
