If you have the name of the person who will be reviewing and selecting applicants it is always best to address the letter to that person directly. Also be sure to tailor your cover letter specifically for each different company. You can use a template that you have created, but change it up depending on the requirements of the different positions.

Use standard paper, fonts and colors. Being fancy or trying to stand out with crazy fonts and paper colors is not the way to get good attention with a cover letter.

Cover letters should be short and brief. Usually they only get a quick glance but they are still a formality that should not be skipped. Avoid reiterating the same information that appears in your resume; it is redundant and unnecessary.

Topics that should be covered in the cover letter include:
The position that you are applying for and how you learned of the position.
Why you are a prefect fit for that position.
How to be contacted for an interview.

Be assertive and explain what you can bring to the company. To describe how you are a good candidate for the position it is best to use the job description and target your related skills…
