Deciding whether to give two weeks notice or not

When you leave a job, there are two things that remain long after you are no longer employed: your personnel file, and your reputation.
While tendering a two week notice of resignation may be standard, my recommendation is that whenever possible an employee should give as much notice as necessary to smoothly transition their responsibilities to someone else.
Your company may have requirements (which you can toss out the window if you work in an “at will” employment state), but what really matters is what is fair to your management and peer group.
This is especially important if you are transferring internally within a large organization. Burning bridges is especially hazardous (and much more likely) in this environment if transitions are not handled correctly.
