Duncan Bannatyne: lack of qualifications need not hold the enterprising back

I often think it was my lack of an education that caused me to become an entrepreneur. I wasn’t motivated by the thought of straight As at GCSE but by moneymaking schemes even at an early age.

At school I was easily distracted by the thought of earning money from my
paper round and I have the same mentality now. I’m not a very good manager
and always want to move on and try different things.

I take nothing away from the achievements of students who work hard and
achieve good grades, and who will go on to have successful careers, but
academic qualifications have no relevance to my life. Many of our best known
entrepreneurs, such as Sir Richard Branson and Sir Alan Sugar, fall into the
same category.

This week is Global Entrepreneurship Week, with over 5,000 events planned
across the UK to inspire young people to make a self-employed living.

It’s a great initiative and highlights the fact that entrepreneurs do not
necessarily need academic qualifications and stellar grades to succeed. The
events will help the students nurture their inherent aptitude …
