I remember the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated, when I was 12. It was a huge event globally, not just in the United States. My father brought me to his office, where everyone was in shock. It was then that I decided to become a journalist.

I graduated from the Lycée Français, a French high school in London, in 1968. That spring there were student revolts in Paris with worker strikes, and I used to go back to France and join the protests. I enrolled in the Sorbonne there and got a part-time job as a photojournalist with U.P.I.

My parents had relocated to Brazil, and in 1970 I visited them and decided to stay. I dropped out of college and got a job as a sports editor for the local English-language newspaper, a daily for the ex-pat community. We used a hot lead press and set …
