The computer industry has been around for over half a century. While the famous information technology (IT) company IBM began its foray into mainframe computing in the 1950s, the company was founded way back in 1889.

Today, careers in the IT industry are numerous and varied, ranging anywhere from high-level IT infrastructure planners to computer programmers to telecommunications specialists, graphic designers, web developers, technical writers, and mobile app developers.

In this article, we’ll discuss several of these career options.

Computer Programming

Computer programmers work behind the scenes to develop the software we use every day. Their task is simple: write code. To many people, programming languages such as C++, Visual Basic, PHP, Perl, or Ruby are intimidating and confounding. But to experienced programmers, it’s simply a means of creating and arranging information electronically.

Telecommunications

With the advent of mobile computing and the growing popularity of smartphones, telecommunications experts work to build and expand communications networks around the globe. Careers in telecommunications include telecom engineers, wireless and wireline implementation specialists, telecom equipment installers, telecommunications analysts, and broadband deployment specialists.

Graphic Design

The field of graphic design is rewarding yet challenging. Traditional print graphic designers may design banners, posters, advertisements, logos, stickers, book covers, T-shirts, and company branding. In recent years, the roles of graphic designer and web designer have merged with many graphic design jobs requiring knowledge of web programming languages such as HTML/CSS, JavaScript, and Flash.

Web Development

Web developers are responsible for coding web pages for proper function and display. Web development is very technical and can include listing, database integration, and scripting. Web development is not to be confused with web design, which is concerned solely with the look and feel of the page.

Technical Writing

IT Technical writers develop documentation for software and hardware applications. Examples of technical documentation include user manuals, training books, courseware documentation (to be used in a classroom setting), methods of procedure, white papers, online help, e-learning, quick guides, and safety documentation. Technical documentation is typically approached in a modular “how-to” fashion.

Technical Training

Technical trainers often work with technical writers to deliver stand-up classroom training for various hardware, software, and telecommunications systems. These IT educators also perform e-learning and distance learning as well. Technical trainers will be in demand as more adults enroll in technology-oriented classes to brush up on their computer skills.

The IT industry has had its ups and downs for sure. But one thing is certain: technology is ever evolving and will continue to be an important career field in the years to come.
