Government job or private job? which is good?

Private sector job:

Higher pay, little or no benefits
No job security. You’re working minute-by-minute
Could be required/ordered to work overtime
Can be fired at any time, without notice
Little, or no chance for advancement (unless you’re connected to someone)
Limit on Sick/Vacation time, may not be able to carry over (of course, depending on your company’s rules)

Public sector job:

Chance for advancement through taking Open-Competitive, then Promo tests. Just aim to score high. Competition’s fierce.

Don’t go in as an Appointee (you didn’t take a test, your resume got you in). Take whatever Open-Competitive test(s) you qualify for. Appointees are subject to be fired/laid off faster than one who’s a Line person (a person who took a test, passed, put on a list, sent an interview notice, and is accepted via that interview for that position).

Overtime at the discretion of your agency, and you have the right to refuse. If you decide to do it, you’re better off grabbing it as Compensatory time (that can be applied either towards Vacation or Sick leave).

Lower comparable pay; however you get raises via your union contract, and good health/pension benefits that’ll count in the long run.

Accumulative Vacation/sick leave (sick leave’s accumulative; Vacation has a cap, but can carry over)

During your Probationary period (or whatever term your state uses for someone just starting out, and the length of that period varies state to state; i.e. 3 or 12 months), you can be fired due to “poor job performance.” Once you’re out of Probationary, unless you commit a crime, go AWOL, or are insubordinate for the most part, you can’t be fired. You’re union.

However, if you’re last in, and there are layoffs, you could be bumped out. Someone senior to your title may be bumped down to your title.

After years of no job security in the investment banking arena, arrogent attitudes when I couldn’t work O.T., but offered to get to work early the next day, walking out at 5:00 and supervisors looking at their watch as though I committed a felony, and just overall arrogence, I switched gears and went Public (Judicial). Best decision I ever made. Two of those companies I worked for no longer exist.
