Graduate Study in Psychology – Choosing the Right Program Type

The decision to pursue advanced study in psychology and behavioral science can leave you with an overwhelming number of directions to choose from, and deciphering the differences between them can be confusing.

PhD in Psychology

The PhD in Psychology encompasses a number of specializations, including Cognitive, Social/Personality, Developmental, Experimental, and Clinical. With most PhD programs, you will designate your chosen speciality at the time of your application. With the exception of the Clinical or Counseling specializations, this is usually an academic and research degree. The clinical and counseling specializations provide a balance between both research and practice. The degree to which each of these is emphasized varies widely and depends entirely on the program. This degree will also qualify you to work as a professor in university psychology departments. These programs generally take approximately 5 years to complete and require a 1-year internship.

PsyD in Clinical Psychology

Unlike the PhD, the PsyD is, for the most part, a purely practical degree. While you will learn basic research skills, the emphasis is primarily on teaching you to be a skilled practitioner of psychology. You will be trained in providing therapy and administering psychological assessments. While this degree will qualify you to teach in PsyD programs, it is generally not looked upon favorably in PhD programs.
