Holiday season brings high staff absence and extra workloads

It’s nearly that time of year again when employees disappear en masse for their annual fortnight in the sun. The sudden staff shortfall means that employers must strike the careful balance between demanding too much of those left in the office, and bringing in expensive and unnecessary short term cover. Too much emphasis in either direction could seriously undermine performance and productivity.
My priority is to look after my existing staff and make sure they are happy in their work. If employees are treated like dispensable commodities by managers who inundate them with extra work to cover colleagues on holiday, it’s only natural that they might become resentful and consider a future elsewhere…
