What’s the best way to apologise for insulting the boss?
First, remember that once you’ve created a problem in e-mail, you can’t solve it in e-mail. As I remind people when I speak on “Smart People, Stupid E-Mails,” a heartfelt apology requires a meeting — or at the very least, a phone call (if you absolutely can’t get a face-to-face).
And second, note that it’s time to have an honest discussion about the real reasons you criticised the boss, and not to simply pussy-foot around about how sorry you are that you behaved unprofessionally.
Yes, you behaved unprofessionally. And yes, you need to apologize. But no, your ordeal does not end there.
It’s time to pony up and be honest about your issues at work — and to admit to yourself that being honest is what you should have been doing all along. But maybe not brutally honest — in e-mail.
