Bookkeeping is a great career in which you can work in a variety of settings. It also has great advancement potential if you’d like to enter the world of accounting. But how do you know if you’d be a good bookkeeper? Answer the questions in this article to know if being a bookkeeper would be a good fit for you.

1. Consider whether or not you are organized. Bookkeepers need to be highly organized. Losing receipts or forgetting to make entries will derail a bookkeeping career quickly. If you are an organized person, you might make a good bookkeeper.

2. Ask yourself if you pay attention to detail. In bookkeeping, getting close is not good enough. Your work must be precise. If you like to balance your checkbook to the penny, you might have the attention to detail that a good bookkeeper needs.

3. Consider whether you enjoy working with numbers. You don’t have to be a math whiz to be a good bookkeeper; bookkeeping is mostly about adding and subtracting and getting numbers into the right place. But you will spend your day working with numbers – in bookkeeping software, in spreadsheets, etc. – and this is something that you want to enjoy before you consider becoming a bookkeeper.

4. Think about whether you enjoy learning. Bookkeepers aren’t usually expected to have college degrees, but some kind of bookkeeping certification and training is important. Additionally, you will want to keep up with continuing education in the bookkeeping field to keep your knowledge current.

5. Consider whether you enjoy working alone. While some bookkeepers work in office or corporate environments, bookkeeping isn’t usually done by teamwork. You will be expected to communicate with co-workers, supervisors, or clients, but much of your day will be spent working alone.

6.Do the above sound like you? If you were able to answer yes to most or all of the above questions, you would likely make a good bookkeeper!
