How To Become a Boatswain

A boatswain is a petty officer on a merchant ship who controls the work of other seamen. The boatswain supervises the other unlicensed crew of the ship.

A boatswain typically plans the day’s work and assigns assignments to deck crew. He also checks on work compliance and approved operating procedures. This means that a boatswain should know the ins and outs of the ship. As the ship’s foreman, the boatswain is required to be highly skilled in all matters of seamanship. He must have very good knowledge of all the work being done on a seagoing vessel.

Here are the steps on how to become a boatswain:
