How can I best explain a 2 year work gap to employers?
The last time I had a “real” job was about two years ago when I was a server at a restaurant. Since then I’ve been concentrating heavily on college and music and doing “under the table” side jobs here and there. Nothing I can put on a resume or application. But now it’s time to get back to work and I have this 2 year gap in my work history. I feel like I’m screwed and nobody will hire me. How can I get through this? Internships are not an option because I need to get paid!!!

Best Answer:

“Under the table”, also means you were “self-employed”.

This can be almost anything from a hit man to a lawn care person.

Develop a good sounding “self-employment” story.

For example, say ” I developed a strategy, from scratch to be independently wealthy, complete with the necessary tools of the trade. I decided after 2 years, I needed more capital (or preferred the company of others who were more experienced, or needed more experience, etc. ) and decided I would do better working with others until I can see my way clear to do the job right, or ” I decided I no longer want to be in business by myself”, etc..

Anything is better than nothing.

Don’t SWEAT it! You’ll get hired unless you can’t walk, talk, or breath!

Whatever you do, think POSITIVE, and TALK POSITIVE.

NEVER EVER say, I don’t know, or I can’t. That’s NEGATIVE.

Remember, Nobody likes a looser– who thinks and talks like one. Usually they don’t even want to be around one.
