Antonia asked:
My boyfriend has struck an interest in truck driving. We live in Texas. How can he go about finding a job? Can he get a truck driving job with an SR22? We don’t know the first thing about the truck driving industry- how do we learn more?
Best Answer:
My brother works at a large trucking corporation in the southeast. He’s a fleet manager (dispatcher) now, but when he started there, he was a recruiter.
The good news for you is that there is currently more freight in this country than there are drivers to move it, so it’s usually pretty easy to get a trucking job.
Two things that you will certainly need are:
1. A CDL (commercial driver’s licence). You can contact your local DMV about how to obtain one.
2. A clean driving record. Usually, they won’t hire you if you’ve had a wreck in the last five to ten years (sometimes even if it isn’t your fault), or more than one or two moving violations such as speeding tickets or following to closely tickets/wreckless driving tickets.
After that, find a company you think you may want to work for and call them, then ask for the recruiting department. Usually, they will hire you within a couple of days and they’ll probably even send you a bus ticket to their location to pick up a truck.
I hopes this helps….and I wish you good luck, there is a LOT of money to be had in trucking if you’re willing to put in the hours!
