Thinking of turning into an event or wedding planner? If you’re in school it’s a great time to start training on becoming an event planner by interning with an event or wedding planning organization. Interning can be a great learning experience for you and you’ll get a good option of what it really takes to become a successful event planner.

While attending college is important and taking business courses will definitely help you become a better businessperson but actually training with an event planner instructs you the actual day to day job skills you’ll need to become a success as a wedding or event planner.

School obviously gives you bookwork training and is a good foundation for turning into a great business person but there’s nothing like hands on training in a real event planning company to give you real practical day to day skills for your success.

If you’re taking into consideration interning let us give you some helpful hints on how to make the experience of interning a positive and productive one.

-Interning in an event planning company can be a great learning opportunity but take care to find an employer who has the time and patience to really train you in all aspects of event planning. Interning is all about gaining work experience and knowledge because it sure ain’t about the money….most interns work for little or no money.

Since you’re not in it for the money its important that you take the time before you commit to an intern job to find a planning company where you’ll get the best training.

If you’re interning at an office where the employer is always crazy busy and you’re always running behind him/her trying to ask questions you may not get the training you need.

-It is important for your internship success that you find a working environment where you can ask as many questions, as you need to and get answers to those questions. That may not happen if the employers or employees for that matter do not have the time to train you while you are interning. It is extremely important that you find an employer who can sit down and talk with you and answer all the important questions you may have.

-As part of internship take it upon yourself to observe the environment around you and learn everything you can about how an event company works. Remember it’s not the employer’s job to teach you everything. Also take advantage of the knowledge of your co-workers… find co-workers who are willing to help you learn from their work experiences.

-As an intern you have a great opportunity to build relationships with other people in the business. Take every opportunity available to make new contacts and build relationships as you intern not only with your co-workers but also with other key players in the industry that you come in contact with.

Interning can be an excellent career stepping stone. Not only can you get on the job training you can also make connections with others working in the industry. The important thing about making your internship a success is to choose the right company and once you’re there learn everything you can about the industry and the people who work in the industry.
