Hi, I have worked in marketing for a little over five years now in various industries. It is a great field to work in.
It is one of the few jobs in any company where you will be involved in a product from before it is developed until it goes off the market. I would recommend mentioning that at the interview saying that this is one of the big things that attracts you to the job.
The first part of your role will probably be analysing the market to see where there are gaps or unmet customer needs (competitor analysis and market research), then on to the product development process (working with R & D on what features the product must have so it can sell), launching the product (pricing, advertising, promotion, trade shows, etc.) and then continuing to ensure that it sells well (by further promotion).
You may also be involved in deciding when a product is no longer viable and so onto the next round of new development and product launches, etc.
Depending on the company there may be international travel, the opportunity to work with distributors and suppliers, sales force training on the new products and working with offices in other countries to tailor materials for their customers.
Overall marketing can be a very varied and rewarding career.
