well for one the only reason they would ask you online is if you were appling for a job. that would really be the only acception. they shouldn’t ask you if you were buying something.well if you don’t have good protection on your computer a hacker could get your number and could do identity theft. nothing bad should really happen if you a cautious of what you do. just pay more attention next time you do these kind of things.

Now to the root of the issue.
You should not put your SS# on any documentation that also contains other specific identifying criteria (such as your address and date of birth) unless you are sure that the site is encrypted and secure.
