The Chancellor reveals his Budget next week and how he sees the rest of the year playing out for the economy. It will be a crucial moment as his words will set the tone for the General Election battle. Employers fear that anything too pessimistic will undermine what the fragile trading environment; job seekers will hope that a clear set of policy statements will offer businesses the certainty they need to begin recruiting again.
It seems to me that there are no definite right or wrong policies – the economy is simply still exposed to a range of uncertainties. We can however, talk about priorities: policy areas that are essential for recovery. The fate of jobseekers is intrinsically linked to the fate of the economy. So what priorities will secure the foundations for long-term recovery and sustainable job creation?
I believe that the most important priority is to ensure that the British economy is given firm foundations for business recovery, which in my mind includes tax cuts rather than rises.
