If you’re one of the people who has been laid off or you are looking to change careers during this Great(er) Depression, be calm, patient and proactive; but more importantly do the
Focus on Growth
Focus on growth industries and areas, such as energy, since the desire for cheap fuel is increasing. Healthcare is another good option, since people will always need medical attention. And since the war on terror is raging on, jobs in the defense industry are a good bet.
Take a Targeted Approach
Put your effort into the opportunities in which you’re most interested and that have the best chance of coming to pass. Choose a few companies and pursue employment there; whether they have current openings or not.
Promote your Brand
Learning how to talk about yourself in a meaningful and powerful way. Create a list of employer-specific interview questions and your answers.
Network-it Out
Break out your smart phone and send out a text to all your friends to tell them that you are looking. Or use Twitter or Facebook or MySpace.
Freelance or Become a Temp
Freelance. It may sound like a dirty word to you professional types, but there’s nothing wrong with freelancing to keep the money coming in while you search for a full-time gig.
If you really hate freelancing, become a temp. Fill a temporary slot at a company that interests you. Temping can pay well, so you’ll be able to pay your bills until a full-time job offer is on the table.
Stay Positive
As Tupac would say, “Keep your head up.” Even in a job market with 10 percent unemployment, there’s 90 percent employment. So keep looking until you find the right job for you.
