Job market back to life as confidence lifts

Job seekers’ luck may finally be turning around with recruiters around the country reporting a pick-up in companies looking to hire.

Financial services firms are leading the demand for new talent, but recruitment specialists also feel that the job declines of the past year have bottomed out in most sectors.

The latest jobs data paints a similar picture.

The Olivier Job Index, which measures national job vacancies, remained steady in July, recording a fall of just 0.41 per cent after dropping 0.85 per cent in June.

Director Bob Olivier thinks of it as the jobs market “bumping along the bottom”.

ANZ, with its monthly monitoring of job advertisements, says newspaper and internet employment ads are showing signs of stabilisation with declines easing over the past five months…
