Government plans to give fathers the right to time off to raise young children
make sense.

How do you think the Government’s plans to increase the amount of time
fathers can take off to care for their young children will affect smaller
businesses?

There’s been much speculation recently about the positive and negative affects
of Labour’s increased paternity plans. Rather than receiving one to two
weeks’ time off, fathers may soon have the right to up to six months’
statutory paternity leave, using the mother’s assigned time off.

One school of thought is adamant that the right to time off will benefit
millions of families; while the other believes it will have a devastating
effect on business, particularly small and medium businesses.

The real issue lies in how many fathers will actually take advantage of the
new statutory time off. And if Labour is elected for another term and these
proposed changes do come to fruition, will dads be given the support to stay
at home?

I believe it will affect a number of smaller, struggling businesses. We’re
only just pulling ourselves out of the recession, so the need for stability
is imperative. …
