Office tips: How to tell coworkers they smell bad

Telling a co-worker about his or her bad hygiene, such as bad breath or body odor, requires tact and civility. While most of us can learn to deal with the unhygienic co-worker, sooner or later most of us will be in a situation when it is necessary to take action in order to “clear the air”, in every sense of the word. Before telling a co-worker that he or she emanates an offensive odor, here are a few things to keep in mind.
1. Is the odor offensive to everyone, or just you? We all have our own interpretations of what smells bad and what doesn’t. What may be an offensive stench to you might not be offensive to others. For example, if everyone in your workplace is a smoker and you are the only non-smoker, it may not be worth the headache and aggravation to complain about the smell of cigarette smoke.
2. Be empathetic. Nobody wants to smell bad, but sometimes it is unavoidable. I recall one situation where a few co-workers were so cruel to an employee that she was forced to quit her job…
