For many it is beneficial to have an online presence. I would say that it’s more useful to have a website that showcases your skills (and I don’t just mean putting a CV up) than a twitter or facebook presence. The latter are far more socially oriented.

In my experience, my blog is a useful way to show prospective employers my creativity and roundedness. In the current climate it’s very important to demonstrate your skills, rather than state them.

Having said that twitter is more socially oriented, don’t forget that networking and word-of-mouth is one of the best ways to find work. I start a job next week that I found by getting to know its co-owner on twitter. They were then tweeting about job opportunities, I mentioned I was interested, they went and looked at my blog, then asked me to send my CV and then to ‘come in for a chat’. From that informal beginning – a job I’m really excited about because I was selected on the basis of my strengths and interests and the fact my personality ‘fits’ the company (as shown via social media outlets).

Being open to other ideas and up-to-date is very much valued by employers. The Internet is a window to the whole world. I don’t believe having your CV in a format that is compatible with the digital platform is compulsory, it is, nevertheless enormously beneficial to your expansion as a professional.

I believe social media is hugely beneficial for graduates as it allows to gain knowledge from others that are in the same situation as you, as well as it connects you to new employers that are looking in the same channel.

I believe there are certain sites that are hugely beneficial to graduates. They allow you to show the level of coherence between your CV, your personality and opinion. Some of them are new and just starting and should therefore be known in all univeristies and mentioned by lecturers.

There are well known sites that have been designed only for professionals, in which case is difficult to create traffic to your profile in order to make yourself more visible to employers because your working experience isn’t quite there yet.

So don’t be shy, log in..! Remeber you don’t have to write all the personal information, just whatever you feel confortable with. What digital is best for is to express your opinion in forums and blogs in sites designed for graduates just like you!
