Things NOT to Say to Someone Who Has Just Been Laid Off

1. “At least you don’t have to go to work! I’m so busy all the time!”
No I will not take this as you attempting to look on the bright side. I will take it as you rubbing it in my face that you still have your job. Instead, perhaps if the person wasn’t exactly working their dream job, you could say something like, “Well maybe you can do some soul searching
2. “Have you posted your resume online yet?”
The person who says this to you immediately after hearing that you’ve lost your job is undoubtedly a problem solver, albeit somewhat insensitive. Never mind the fact that you’ve spent the past 3 hours in the fetal position on your couch, and have already applied for 12 jobs on monster.com ranging from actuary to telemarketer. Obviously if the unfortunate person found themselves a job in the first place, they are familiar with the process and do not need prodding from you. Instead maybe try saying, “You poor thing! Let me know if you need any help with the job search once you’re ready.” Helpfulness is key, without sounding pushy.
3. “Times are tough”
You’ve still got your job don’t you? Thats what I thought….
