UK at risk of creating a jobless ‘lost generation’

The number of young people trapped out of work for two years or more in the UK has jumped by nearly half over the past year despite overall employment beginning to rise, official figures have shown.

A total of 72,000 18 to 24-year olds had been unemployed for 24 or more months in the three months to June, up 41.9pc year-on-year and up 11pc on the previous quarter, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). A further 184,000 young people were out of work for a year or more in the three months to June.
The figures come as another new report, published today by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), shows the global youth unemployment rate has reached its highest on record, reaching 13pc in 2009, and will add to fears that younger workers are being increasingly shut out of the labour market, leading to a “lost generation” of people…
