Underemployment rose sharply during the recession, Government figures have
shown, in statistics that take the gloss off a relatively robust performance
from the UK labour market during the economic downturn.

Almost three million people were not working as many hours as they would have
liked to in the third quarter of 2009, a sharp jump from the 2.1m over the
same period two years ago, according to figures published on Tuesday by the
Office for National Statistics (ONS).
