Unemployment figures: jobless total expected to hit 2.5 million

The number of people out of work is expected to hit 2.5 million as the final
unemployment figures of the year are revealed.

Ministers are hoping for further signs that the increase in the jobless total
has started to ease.

Analysts said unemployment had risen at a much more subdued pace in recent
months than they had expected given the ongoing contraction in the economy.

The figure for youth unemployment has been approaching a million in recent
months.

The Government has announced measures to tackle youth unemployment, including
100,000 new jobs, apprenticeships and training opportunities for under 25s
as new figures showed that one in three 16 and 17-year-olds are out of work.

Ministers confirmed that everyone under the age of 25 will be guaranteed a
job, training or work experience after six months unemployment and said the
aim was to see youth unemployment falling in the second half of next year.

Jobs being created include police community support officers in London, work
in the health sector and probation service and others helping to build a
national cycle network.
