Ways to stay sane at work

In today’s tough market, stress in the workplace is at an all-time high. Increased layoffs result in workers carrying new and different responsibilities, with the ever-present concern about the viability of their own job and the financial security of their family and friends.

As a result, it is more important than ever to develop strategies to minimize stress and “stay sane” at work.

Here are a few tips:

Stay positive. While it can feel great to initiate a “venting session” about woes at work, nothing kills morale more than an office-wide negative vibe. Venting sessions can also adversely affect your personal productivity and reputation in the workplace. Look for opportunities to promote what’s going well in the company via a company newsletter, a weekly email announcement from a company leader, or simply in conversation with others. Be sure to identify real accomplishments; don’t just take a “Pollyanna approach” (which could annoy those around you).
